I Built this because We Need It!

“Market Hive SA started with a problem I experienced myself. I discovered just how hard it can be to start a small business, find the right markets and get your product noticed. I built this because I realized we need it.
Welcome to Market Hive SA: I Built the Hive Because We Need It
Sometimes a business idea starts with a business plan. Sometimes it starts with a gap in the market. And sometimes, it starts because you are trying to solve a problem for yourself.
For me, Market Hive SA started during Covid.
Like so many other people, my working life changed almost overnight. I was a photographer, and suddenly the work I had always done wasn't possible anymore. I couldn't work in the way I had before, and like many small business owners, I had to think about what I could do next.
So I created a product and decided to try getting it into the market scene.
And that's when I discovered just how much there is to learn when you are starting a small business.
Creating the product was a lot of trial and error, but once I was happy with the original, then came everything else.
How do I package it? What does the label need to say? Where do I get the right packaging? How do I advertise it? Which markets should I approach? Which ones are suitable for my product? Which ones still have space? What equipment do I need? Do I need shelving? How should I brand my stall? Where is the best place to stand?
And then there are all the things you don't think about until you're actually doing it.
If your product can melt, for example, suddenly where your stall is positioned becomes very important. Is it in the sun? Is there shade? Are people going to walk past you or straight past you? Is the market busy? Is the type of person attending actually interested in what you're selling?
There are so many little decisions.
And when you're a small business, those decisions matter because you don't have a huge budget to get everything wrong a few times before you figure it out.
I found myself searching in lots of different places for answers. Facebook groups. Market pages. Suppliers. Google. Other businesses. People who had been doing markets for years.
There were little bits of information everywhere, but it was scattered all over.
I kept thinking, Surely there should be somewhere that brings all of this together?
And eventually that thought became Market Hive SA.
It started with one small business problem. It grew into a much bigger idea.
The more I thought about it, the more I realised that I couldn't possibly be the only person experiencing this.
There are thousands of small businesses in South Africa trying to get their products out into the world. People making beautiful things from home. Bakers, crafters, artists, food vendors, farmers, vintage sellers, thrift traders, people with little businesses they have built from an idea and a lot of determination.
And behind all of them are markets.
But finding the right market isn't always easy. Finding out whether there is space, who to contact, what the requirements are, what the market is like and whether it is actually a good fit for your product can take an enormous amount of time.
Then there are the suppliers and services you need along the way.
Packaging. Printing. Branding. Equipment. Shelving. Signage. Photography. Transport. And all the other things that a small business eventually needs.
I started thinking about how useful it would be if there was one place where you could start looking.
That became the idea behind Market Hive SA.
Not just a list of markets, but somewhere the different parts of the market community could actually connect.
And then I started thinking about what happens after the market.
This part is really important to me.
When you sell something at a market, hopefully you make a sale. But what happens afterwards?
Someone buys your product, loves it, goes home and a few weeks later wants another one.
Can they find you?
Maybe they remember your name. Maybe they remember the stall. Maybe they took a business card. Maybe they followed you on Facebook.
But maybe they didn't.
Maybe they simply remember, I bought that amazing thing at that market a few weeks ago.
That's where I see another opportunity for Market Hive SA.
Your physical stall might only exist for a day, but your business doesn't disappear when the market closes.
We want your Market Hive listing to become a digital market stall that people can come back to.
Someone could discover you at a market and then find you again on the site. They could send your listing to a friend. They could find you when searching for a particular product. They might discover you months later and become a customer without ever having met you at a market in the first place.
And that's a completely different kind of visibility.
Your market day might give you customers today.
Your online presence could help you find customers tomorrow.
But the other side of this is just as important.
There are some incredible markets happening across South Africa, and I don't think enough people know about them.
We want to change that.
Market Hive SA isn't only going to be about getting vendors onto a website. We want to actively work on bringing people to the website too.
That means advertising Market Hive SA and the markets listed on it to people who are looking for things to do.
Local people.
Families.
People travelling around South Africa.
Domestic tourists.
International visitors.
Someone visiting Cape Town might be looking for a Saturday market. Someone travelling through the Garden Route might want to find a local market. A tourist might be looking for handmade South African products or a more authentic experience than simply visiting the usual tourist attractions.
We want Market Hive SA to become somewhere they can discover those things.
And when they come looking for a market, they can discover the vendors there too.
That's the part that really excites me.
We're not just trying to advertise the Hive to the people already inside it. We're trying to bring new people into it.
I don't want Market Hive SA to feel like just another directory.
There are plenty of directories.
What I want is something that feels useful.
Something that you can actually use when you are trying to solve a problem.
A vendor should be able to think, Where can I find a market?
A market organiser should be able to think, Where can I find vendors?
A business should be able to think, Where can I get what I need?
And a visitor should be able to think, What's happening this weekend?
Those questions are all connected.
That's why we're bringing Markets, Vendors, Suppliers, Services and Events together.
The idea has grown considerably from where I started.
What began with me trying to find my way through the market world has become an idea for creating a home for the wider South African market community.
I think that's why we call it the Hive.
A hive isn't one bee.
It works because lots of different bees are doing different things, but they are all contributing to the same place.
That's how I see Market Hive SA.
The market organiser has a role. The vendor has a role. The supplier has a role. The customer has a role. Even the person who tells their friend about a great market they've discovered is contributing.
And when those connections happen, everybody has the potential to benefit.
That's what we mean by Connect. Trade. Grow Together.
We're still building it.
And I think that's worth saying too.
Market Hive SA isn't something that arrived fully formed.
It's evolving.
I'm learning as I go. I'm listening to what markets and vendors need. I'm thinking about what would have helped me when I was starting out, and I'm trying to build those things into the platform.
I don't expect to have every answer.
But I do know what it feels like to start with an idea and realise that there is an awful lot more involved than you ever imagined.
And if Market Hive SA can make that journey a little easier for someone else, then it is already doing something worthwhile.
Maybe someone will find a market that turns their little side business into something bigger.
Maybe a market will discover a vendor who becomes one of their regular favourites.
Maybe someone will find a supplier they desperately needed.
Maybe a visitor to South Africa will discover a wonderful local market they would never have found otherwise.
Maybe a customer will find a small business again because they remembered the name from Market Hive SA.
Those might seem like small things individually.
But small businesses are built from small things.
One customer.
One sale.
One market.
One recommendation.
One opportunity.
And sometimes, one person simply needs to know where to look.
That's why I built Market Hive SA.
Because I needed somewhere like this.
And now I hope it becomes somewhere that you need too.
Welcome to the Hive. 🐝
